Non-Exclusionary Discipline Email Contact for your Questions & Additional Info

MDE has established this email contact [email protected] where you can send questions you have about non-exclusionary discipline given recent legislation. Also of note is that MDE’s non-exclusionary disciplinary team has established a principal committee to help support the creation of guidance documents as well as function as an advisory group/cohort on what’s needed to help principals and staff move forward. The first meeting of the group is scheduled for August 3, from 2-3pm.

Join the 110 School Districts who use the MASA Jobsite!

Post unlimited job vacancies, for all levels of positions. The MASA Jobsite Online is well managed with daily attention to detail and customer service. The cost of an annual subscription is less than just a few advertisements placed in the major and local newspapers. Also, the Department of Education recognizes the MASA Jobsite as a valid advertisement when a school district is seeking a variance for a teacher in a specific subject.

We have found that with staffing changes some new school district employees working to advertise job openings are unfamiliar with this service offered by MASA. Please share this link, https://jobsitemnasa.org/, with whomever is responsible for posting open positions for your school district.  If you do not use this service, click on the link to find out more information.

Have you Registered for the MDE/MASA Back to School Conference?

This annual conference features Commissioner Willie Jett and MDE staff who will provide valuable information and updates from the department. In addition, there will be a panel of education organization executive directors and lobbyists who will discuss the most recent legislative session. Governor Walz has been invited to attend and we await response from his office to see if his schedule will allow him to attend. We hope you are able to attend to learn and network with your colleagues! Register for the conference here – registrations fees increase on Tuesday, July 25!

Nominate a Colleague for Superintendent of the Year!

MASA’s program is open to all active superintendents and being named as Superintendent of the Year is an important responsibility for whomever is selected. The deadline to nominate a colleague is August 4, 2023. Full information at www.mnasa.org/superintendent-of-the-year-nomination.

Short Call Substitute Pilot Program:

If you are signed up to receive emails from PELSB, you may have noted this message regarding a new pilot program for short call substitutes. What is not mentioned in the message from PELSB, and is written in statute, is that the daily rate for substitutes in this pilot program is $200.

For some school districts, the rate of pay may be an important consideration in determining whether they apply to be part of the pilot program.

MDE Resource for the READ ACT Which Includes Approved Literacy Screener Tools for Students in K-3:

I recommend reviewing the MDE READ Act information and bookmarking the page for future reference. The approved screeners are identified along with a timeline for implementation and more.

By participating in this initiative, you will gain access to valuable salary and benefits data provided by others in similar roles prior to your own contract negotiations. Please click here to submit your data by August 15th, 2023.

MASA/MASE Spring Conference Dates: Check your Calendar!

Please note the conference dates for 2024 are March 14-15.  There was earlier communication the week prior, so be sure to update your calendar to reflect these new dates. Sorry for any confusion!
