Here’s the scoop for the week

Remember that School Staff Shortage Survey you Replied to this Summer?

I am now able to share the results of the survey MASA helped facilitate earlier this year. The response rate was excellent and there are charts and data that are instructive regarding what our school districts are facing in their hiring attempts. The first part of the report identifies who responded and once you scroll past that information, there is useful data and some charts. Thank you for responding to the survey.

Now, it’s Time for Another Survey!

Each year, MASA surveys its members to ensure the work we are doing reflects the needs of our members.  In order to make sure we support your work as best we can, your honest feedback and comments are appreciated in this year’s survey!  Please complete the survey by Friday, September 30.

Congratulations to the Following Schools for their Recent Recognitions:

“Through the Minnesota School of Excellence program, grounded in national research on high-performing schools, MESPA has created the premier opportunity in the state for validating excellence and a commitment to continual growth in a school community,” said Jon Millerhagen, MESPA executive director.  “This school improvement program examines the entire school community through six national standards, ensuring there is a holistic approach to creating a plan for future achievement and celebrating the unique accomplishments of each School of Excellence.”

Four schools achieved recognition as 2022-2023 Minnesota Schools of Excellence:

  • Kasson-Mantorville Elementary, Kasson-Mantorville Schools
  • Oak Hills Elementary, Lakeville Area Schools
  • Hawthorne Elementary, Albert Lea Area Schools
  • Sebeka Public School, Sebeka Public Schools

Commissioner Heather Mueller recently announced the following Minnesota schools are among the 300 that received national recognition as Blue Ribbon Schools:

  • Bloomington – Seven Hills Preparatory Academy
  • Brainerd – Lowell Elementary School, Brainerd Public School District
  • Cloquet – Churchill Elementary School, Cloquet Public School District
  • Good Thunder – Maple River West Elementary School, Maple River School District
  • Plymouth – Kimberly Lane Elementary School, Wayzata Public School District
  • Rochester – Lincoln K-8 School, Rochester Public School District
  • Springfield – Springfield Elementary School, Springfield School District
  • Woodbury – Lake Middle School, South Washington County School District

Handling School Cash Resources

From the Office of State Auditor, Julie Blaha, “Schools should periodically review internal control procedures that will help protect school funds. This is critically important for anyone who may be handling cash. The Minnesota Department of Education publishes the Manual for Activity Fund Accounting (MAFA), which contains numerous internal control procedures that should be followed whenever a school handles cash. Advisors who will be handling student activity funds must acknowledge in writing receipt of a copy of MAFA and their responsibility for assuring that MAFA procedures are followed. The Avoiding Pitfall School Cash Handling Procedures is available on the OSA’s website.”

Have your Central Office Staff and Technology Leaders Joined MASA?

I have observed that there are some leaders who would benefit from joining MASA, but not all are aware the organization is for them, too!  Please encourage your colleagues who are in any of the following component groups to consider joining MASA. We are stronger and better together and would benefit from their involvement!

  1. Superintendents
  2. Central Office Administrators
  3. Special Education Administrators
  4. Service Provider Organization Instructors or Administrators
  5. Curriculum Administrators
  6. Technology Leaders

Leadership Matters:

“Just because I disagree with you, does not mean that I hate you. We need to relearn that in our society.” - Morgan Freeman
