New Interim Leader Named to Lead the Board of School Administrators, BOSA:

Karen Schaub has been named the new Interim Executive Director of BOSA. She will begin her position on Friday, April 1st.

1884 Como No more!

The MASA office located at 1884 Como Avenue has been sold and the MASA Board of Directors passed a resolution enabling me to sign the final papers at the closing on April 1-no joke! Staff will continue to work remotely and meetings will be held at the Marriott Northwest and the Quora Education Center which is part of ISD 916.

You can expect the same great service from MASA staff who will carefully monitor this new arrangement to ensure this is the best direction for our organization in the years to come.

Should MASA once again collect superintendent salary and compensation data?

I am often asked for current salary and compensation information for superintendents which I do not have. MASA has collected this information in the past. If we do so again, this will of course be voluntary, shared only with those who participate, and we will need participants to input data on an easy to complete spreadsheet.

I request your feedback to ensure this is a worthwhile effort. Please send me a quick yes or no at https://forms.gle/DGfEtvA29x9wyMG99.

My absence for a spring break:

I will be on vacation beginning March 21 through March 25. You can always feel free to call me, but if I am unavailable, please contact Mia Urick, MASA Director of Professional Learning, at 651-491-4557, or [email protected]. You may also contact MASA President Dan Bittman at 763-234-3299, or [email protected].

Leadership Matters:

If you want to leave your mark, be generous.

If you want to make a difference, be attentive.

If you want to be forgiven, be apologetic.

If you want to learn, be teachable.”

MASA BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING SYNOPSIS:

The board met on March 9, 2022, and worked through a robust agenda. Some of the items were standard review and others listed below might be of greater interest to you:

  • MASA has accepted an offer for the sale of 1884 Como Avenue. The final investigation period for the buyer ends on March 13.  If no issues arise, a closing will be scheduled for April 1, 2022. The sale price of $795,000 is just above the asking price of $793,000 and is an all cash offer.
    • MASA and MASE meetings for the next year will be held in rental space with another school district. Details are still being worked on and more information will come in the weeks ahead.
  • The Class AA MASA position on the MSHSL Board of Directors vacated by Dr. Teri Staloch who is leaving the superintendency will be filed by St. Louis Park Superintendent Astein Osei. Astein was appointed by the board to fill out the remainder of Teri’s term which will expire on July 31, 2023.
  • Beginning July 1, 2022, a new member benefit will be offered to MASA members. The board approved a contract with the Joe Donovan Group to provide urgent/crisis communication at no cost to member school districts!  Members will have direct access to the Donovan Group. All urgent/crisis communication developed by the Donovan Group will be customized to the school district’s needs and become the property of the school district. Any school districts who wish to work separately with the Donovan Group on other matters; for example, communication for operating and/or bond elections, or strategic planning, will be able to enter into a separate contract with the Donovan Group which will result in revenue sharing of 5% of the gross total contract to be provided to MASA. This will help defray the cost of the new member benefit. The Donovan Group has worked successfully for years with Wisconsin and has already provided immediate assistance to some of our members. I recently shared a possible response from the Donovan Group to a Tik Tok challenge for your use which I have learned was very helpful to many of you. The Donovan Group will also provide professional development at MASA conferences as requested. The board is very excited to offer this benefit to our members!
  • Membership dues for the 2022-2023 school year will remain the same.
  • The contract with Ewald Consulting was approved enabling us to continue working with Lobbyist Valerie Dosland.

PSEO Information on your website: Did you know about the March 1 deadline?

I was recently presented with a 32 page draft report written by “People for PSEO.” Included in the report titled, “A PSEO Information Gap Report,” is data indicating that many high schools/district websites are not in compliance with MN statute Sec. 124D.09 MN Statutes. Subdivision 7 of the statute deals directly with dissemination of information by schools/school districts and the March 1 deadline.

I encourage you to review the statute and to mark your calendar, or have relevant staff mark their calendar in future years to comply with the March 1 deadline.
