The MDE/MASA 2012 School Leadership Summit: Minnesota on the Move is on the books. I’d like to share a few highlights…
Our keynote speaker, Tony Wagner, expressed that every child must experience/possess Play, Passion and Purpose. In order to move education forward in Minnesota, Tony suggested that a number of things be done including: gaining consensus on what a 18-21 year old needs in order to be successful in our society, creating performance standards for students, and having every student construct a digital portfolio that would document a student’s educational experience by providing evidence of progressive mastery of content and skills.
Another treat of the conference was a conversation with three Minnesota teachers who came through the educational system in Finland. Currently Finland leads the world in student achievement in many measures. On Monday, MASA’s What We Are Reading blogger reviewed Finnish Lessons by Pasi Sahlberg. This book details the process the Finns used to change their system. You can find book notes as well as articles on the blog post. Commissioner Cassellius is very interested in organizing an educational trip to Finland to see first hand how their education system functions so watch for information from her regarding this possibility.
This conference offered the opportunity for superintendents to bring members of their leadership team to the conference. I’m asking for your feedback on this concept. Is it a good concept? Should it be done again? Respond to this blog, email, or call me and please share your thoughts!
Following the Summit, our first session of the 2012-2013 Great Start Workshop was held. Thirteen new superintendents interacted with some “veterans” who shared knowledge and experiences. I encourage you to please seek out your colleagues who are in a new position this year. Offer your assistance and make sure each of them knows that they have a support network within their region and from all of us at MASA.
A reminder that our MASA Fall Conference will be held Sunday evening, September 30th and Monday and Tuesday, October 1st and 2nd at Madden’s in Brainerd. We will focus on how we can truly innovate on behalf of all students. Registration materials will be emailed to you soon and I sincerely hope that will be able to join us!
